| The Cheektowaga Soccer Club is a non-profit
organization that was founded in 1993 by a group of parents whose children played soccer
in the Maryvale School District. Started by Joseph Karnath, Frank and Teri Nati, Phil and
Bev Friedly, and Linda Shephard, the club now registers over 750 players each year. The
club has expanded from its origins in the Maryvale School District and now includes all
Cheektowaga School Districts and any residents of the town of Cheektowaga. Originally
called the Maryvale/Cheektowaga Soccer Club, the organization was renamed the Cheektowaga
Soccer Club in March 2001. Joe Karnath served as the
club's first President, Joe Schuh as the Vice-President, Teri Nati as the Treasurer, and
Linda Spephard as the Secretary. The Board of Directors appointed Matt Haberl as the
Soccer Director in charge of developing a variety of programs. Past Presidents include
Chuck Donner, Al Longo, Rich Grabiec and current President Tom Raczynski.
The club has been able to develop programs which offer an
opportunity for kids to learn about soccer through all four seasons. The club has always
prided itself on quality soccer instruction for beginners and advanced players while
advancing its main goal of promoting youth soccer and the ideals of fair play, teamwork,
and good sportsmanship through healthy competition.
Along with the various soccer programs offered, CSC has
created the Kenneth Nowak Scholarship Award in the memory of
one of its dedicated volunteers. The award is available to students (during their senior
year of High School) who show dedication to academics, the community, and their soccer
program. The award is open to students attending a school in the town of Cheektowaga or to
current CSC players that attend schools outside of the town (i.e.- Canisius, Nardin).
The winning students receive a monetary scholarship, a
plaque, and their name is added to a trophy that remains on display at their school.
